Visible areas (of any color) in the original layer become white areas in the mask, which become visible areas on the host layer.
 

    Transparent areas in the original layer become black areas in the mask, which become transparent areas on the host layer.
 

    Partially transparent areas (of any color) in the original layer become gray areas in the mask, which become partially transparent areas on the host layer.
